Hugo Wernhoff started Lanterna Education with a co-founder. Lanterna is a course provider set up to help students achieve their ambition and to cater for their individual needs so they can really fulfill their potential. When visiting schools around the world, Hugo and his team started thinking about new ways in which they could offer students and teachers value by reinventing the textbook experience from scratch in an online, interactive format. Their motivation was that for learning, the medium of technology has many advantages over the static experience of printed text on paper. Content that can provide interactivity, immersion, simulation, and visualization increases students’ levels of engagement, while technology’s enhanced capabilities for data-gathering, communication and automating activities such as marking and assessment can facilitate key processes for teachers. Hugo and his team combined all these possibilities to create Kognity, which they launch in September 2014. Kognity adapted the traditional textbook to digitally consumable text with videos and interactivities.
On November 29, 2019, Hugo described the venture of Kognity at an event designed for thought leaders, THE UCL EDUCATE Demo Day 2019.
