W07: Game-based Learning

By Carla Pretorius on February 16, 2020

Dear ETEC522’ers

Welcome to Week 7 where the topic for the week will be Game-based Learning! We hope that you will enjoy going through our OER this week and that there will be an opportunity for you to learn at least one or two new things regarding the use of games in education. Of course, we would like to encourage you all to participate in the activities that we have included in the OER not just because we need to track participation (please include your name in posts that we are in fact able to do that) but more importantly to give us all a chance to learn from one another. You might notice that we decided not to focus on game-based learning in a broad sense throughout the entire OER but rather we chose to narrow in on a rather new type of gameplay that has entered the market that we wanted to present to you which is VR/AR/MR games.

Taking a step back, we will begin by looking at some of the theory related to game-based learning and to start us off, we invite you to answer or muse the following question and to provide your answer by following the link below.

Question: What do you think makes for a good learning experience?

https://PollEv.com/free_text_polls/sD429H7jU47BvdBsr1pye/respond

Once you enter our website, all the participants’ responses will be visible and we will take things from there.

We thus present to you Game-based learning 2.0 (use the link below):

Thanks very much to your entire team for this OER. I found it to be very well designed and full of very useful information. In particular I appreciated your exploration of the growing potential value of AR and VR for use in therapy situations. I have been monitoring this market very closely in recent years and continue to be excited about the possibilities. You raise some interesting topics of discussion (although my hatred for all things Padlet continues to grow). You also provide a reasonably good breakdown of the difference between game-based learning and gamification. I would have preferred to spend less time on this area, however, and more exploring the potential in the market. I also, really appreciated the differentiations you made between use opportunities in Elementary, High School, and Adult learning. Overall, a good week of learning about this very interesting topic. Well done!

Thank you all for a great OER! I thought your weebly website design was very well laid out and I greatly enjoyed the topics you highlighted. I especially appreciated the page on K-12 special education and the use of Virtual Reality. VR is something I never actually thought about incorporating in my practice, however after watching some of the videos that you posted and doing some of my own research, I can see how it can be beneficial if set up in a meaningful and reliable way. Thanks again!

Thank you for creating this wonderful OER. I loved the integration of graphics, media and the text layout. Use of genial.ly and the infographics as well the quotes by Confucius, Roald Dahl, etc. made the presentation more engaging. It may sound a bit off-topic but I am wondering what your views are on game-based learning for adult learners? I am involved in learning development in a corporate training department and any resources or insights that you could offer in this are will be very helpful to me!

A big thank you Jessica, Brian, Greg and Carla for this presentation! I quite enjoyed the breakdown of VR/AR games in the classroom, and my group will be presenting an extension to this soon. One piece of constructive feedback I'd like to offer is when I got to the end of the 7-12 Education section, I thought I was done. It wasn't until I revisited the site later to see I had missed navigating to the K-12 Special Education section, as the button to continue was buried beneath all of our comments.

Hello Team, Thank you for your thorough look at game-based learning including AR/VR. I have admittedly very little experience with AR/VR learning, so it was interesting to be able to see some of the functionality that is possible. If I could provide a quick comment or two for your own reflection - the term "VR serious games" was used numerous times within the "Game-based Learning 2.0" page, but I don't think I saw a place where you really broke down what constituted a "serious" game. Also, maybe it was just me, but it felt like some of the info within the "7-12 Education" page really just repeated content that you had covered earlier within your "Game-Based Learning 2.0" page. I also just wanted to quickly mention that I think you guys did a fantastic job at responding to the input that you garnered from us classmates.

Hi Week 7 Team! I learned a lot from your OER and particularly enjoyed the interactive infographics you embedded using Genially (https://www.genial.ly/) - what a great resource! Differentiating gamification and game-based learning right away was useful, because I think that would have caused confusion further down the line. Although we were focusing on digital game-based learning, it would have been interesting to see some examples of non-digital game-based learning activities (although you had plenty of content, so probably not necessary to add more). Forecasting the market growth in game-based learning aligned well with this course's objectives, and it was a well-planned decision to narrow your focus of game-based learning to AR/VR (otherwise, there might be too much information to go around). One thing that I would have appreciated would be a choice to participate in either the K-6 or 7-12 Focus Activities, since they had similar questions. Thank you for your detailed presentation!

Thanks for a wonderful OER experience! I found the number and variety of activities and the pacing of them to be very effective. The content was also relevant, well presented, interesting and well researched. The only suggestion I have for improvement — and it’s a minor one — is that you might have added some content that explicitly addresses the investment potential of educational xR for a specific audience (VC investor, school district supervisor, university dean, etc.)

Hi Game-based Learning Team, good job! Your OER is chock full of good information. I like your title of the section “Games-based Learning 2.0” as this fits well with the linking of games-based learning and AR/VR.

Jessica, Brian, Greg & Carla - This was excellent! I thought you really zeroed in on a specific area and gave an excellent rationale for why you chose to. And your site was very resource-rich. But one thing I especially liked was how, although there were a LOT of resources, it didn't feel overwhelming. I liked how you provided opportunity for us to self-scaffold as we went through your materials. Adding the YouTube playlist was a great touch. And the progression of infographic ----> summary article ----> full research paper was really helpful. Overall, I found this OER to be really engaging and highly interactive which helped with my own learning. To further Carlo's comment below, the Padlet that wasn't working was the one titled "Remake of Activity". It isn't giving us the option to post (ie. no + sign showing). Great work!

Great job team! Thanks for sharing this information on game-based learning and making a distinction between GBL and Gamification. Although I found much value in your OER, I think it could have been valuable to explore some of the potential detriments of Game-Based Learning to provide a more wholistic picture, but otherwise, I appreciated the amount of research that went in to putting this together. Just an FYI! - One of the padlets you included wouldn't let me post! I believe it was the one on applying VR/AR to students with exceptionalities.
