Immersive Experience (XR)

By anouk tenten on March 1, 2020

Welcome to this Week 9 – Opportunity Forecast-

We are happy to welcome you in the world of Immersive Experience (XR), we hope that with our OER you are able to understand, learn, and reflect on the topic of Immersive Experience. In other words in AR and VR (XR) experiences…

Concrete examples or experiences with VR/AR  in your daily lives might be lacking. However, the development of Virtual/Augmented Reality software is booming and the use of it seems endless. With its origin from the game industry, VR/AR is emerging as a learning technology in many other industries. Maybe not too long from now you will be able to delve into the opportunities that XR has to offer in your own work or private life.

We admit we struggled to find very helpful and concrete evidence for VR in education, and we see an opportunity to use this OER to combine and extend our shared knowledge around this topic. The scope of our week is limited so as to not overwhelm you with everything out there on this complex but booming topic. We have chosen to narrow down our information in relation to market trends, education and its pitfalls, and provide you with use cases from industry and healthcare to consider their crossover potential for XR in education. Here’s what you can expect from this week:

  1. An introduction into Immersive Experience
  2. Market Analyses
  3. Immersive Experience & Education (an ambiguous field)
  4. An exploration of use cases in Healthcare (proven success)
  5.  Assignments & References

Thank you for your active participation & enjoy!

Thank you, Team Immersive Experience. I did not know much about Immersive Learning and I must say your detailed presentation has provided me with a lot of good ideas. I liked the professional presentation, the infographics and the activities. The poll feature was interesting too. Good work!

THANK YOU team xR! I thoroughly enjoyed your OER and plan to share it with colleagues who have expressed interest in the topic. I was surprised to learn about the stats on xR development from Gossett, and am happy to be exposed to more of Bailenson's work too. One of the things I liked best was how much I learned about the different kinds of input and presentation tools one can easily incorporate into a freemium wiki platform project! I haven't used Mentimeter for a while, for example, and was happy to see how it has expanded the kinds of interactions it provides. **** SUGGESTION ***** One small suggestion I have is to consider adding the ability for smartphone users to open all the graphics in separate tabs. That would allow for zooming in to see details that are often too small to see on the image when it's embedded on the page and viewed on a mobile screen!

The smooth integration of activity and content, as well as visually appealing organization of material through embedded tabs were great design features I'd like to highlight for this OER. While the amount of information was overwhelming at times, I think your team did a good job of balancing interactive and static content as well as providing a plethora of resources for the K-12 education sector to use in building future proposals and projects around immersive experiences. PS What kind of code did you use to embed the multiple tabs element in your web applet? It was an excellent way to organize large amounts of information. Thank you for sharing!

Great job XR team! You have created a created OER primer on immersive experience. I particularly enjoyed the healthcare application as I do believe some of the most innovative uses of AR/VR are in that industry. The one bit of critical feedback I would like to give you is that the resource is quite long with a lot of additional media, which detracts from your analysis of the topic. Perhaps consider condensing some of the sections by being more specific around the applications you want to cover. Or you could consider adding an executive summary at the beginning, so users know which sections they may want to focus on.

A big thank you to the XR Team on this OER - Although I sometimes felt overloaded by the amount of information you chose to include, you did an excellent job iterating real world applications of XR in a number of different industries. I will certainly be coming back to the OER to do some deeper digging. I appreciate the work you did!

XR Team, You guys did a fantastic job. Your OER was very informative and interesting, and I feel like I have a much better grasp on the current state of XR. As you elicited a lot of feedback already on what we learned and found most interesting, I won't add more here. As for areas for improvement, I would consider taking the "Market" tab out of Health Care section and just including that information above, as all the other tabs dealt with cases. All in all though, it was great - thank you!

Immersive Experience (XR) team, thank you! Thank you for putting this OER together. You did an amazing job. I thoroughly enjoyed perusing your OER and participating in the activities. I was not aware of the extent to which XR immersive experiences could be beneficial for all this field of learning in education and healthcare that you elaborated on. Diagnostic & planning and education & training are fields of learning where innovative XR immersive experiences would reshape how we learn and prepare for tasks or endeavors.

This is just a phenomenal OER. I am a combination of excited, jealous, and nervous by the work you've done as it raises the bar for the entire class, in my opinion. I would gladly share this with other professionals and think that anybody interested in XR would find value in the exhaustive and exceptionally well presented material. This is definitely a 5/5 for me or at least a 4.8. You are heavily focused on VR (as our entire cohort seems to be). I would have liked to see some more far out thinking about what types of technologies will be integrated into XR in the future. However, I absolutely loved some of the real world examples you presented as well as some of the thinking about how that could be applied in educational contexts. Great resources that I will definitely be bookmarking and come back to for work and study. Also, I will look forward to hearing some of the responses from the expert Q&A, which is a really great idea. Overall, this is just excellent work. Thank you!

I am going to do a true elevator pitch without visuals or audio, also FlipGrid did not work for me and I do not know why. My pitch is for Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is a simple and affordable way to do VR; as a teacher I probably can afford Google Cardboard and I feel that I cannot afford Google Cardboard then I probably would not be able to afford some of the other products. The instructions to make a Cardboard viewer is available so I can make an activity out of this for my students and at the same time it saves the cost of purchasing one. Google Cardboard has an open source development kit so that anyone can develop experiences for the Google Cardboard. Again I could leverage this to create STEM activities for senior students interested in doing this. At the same time this provides a high level of confidence for the availability of experiences for the Google Cardboard as any developer anywhere can create experiences for the Google Cardboard.
