A3 – FOODIKI

By Emily on March 28, 2020

What was your first your first year of university like? Do remember what it was like? How healthy do you think your nutritional habits were?

According to research, only 13.2% of students meet Canada’s Food Guide Nutrition Guidelines (Kotila, 2019)! University is a critical period in the life of young adults for many reasons, and one that is commonly overlooked in my opinion relates to students’ food choices and their relationship with weight gain (Sogari, 2018). Frequently, behaviours established during this time can help or hinder them well into their adult lives if not the rest of their lives (Abraham, 2018). Many students struggle with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight owing to their dietary habits in post-secondary school.

Now how do you think students would feel if we could help them and change this? That is why I created “FOODIKI”.

“FOODIKI” is the name of my venture in learning technology. “FOODIKI” will redefine the student experience and positively support, influence and improve student eating habits and nutritional knowledge from the time they begin their post-secondary education to beyond graduation and even for the rest of their lives.

Please see below the links for you to view my Elevator Pitch and Venture Pitch below:

Thank you,

Emily

FEEDBACK: Thank you for your Foodiki pitch, Emily. As you used good imagery and problem articulation to speak about a concern that resonates with many, I imagine there could be market interest in the product. However, if Foodiki is to function as a tracking app (I wasn't entirely sure of what it the Foodiki solution was exactly), it could be lost in a sea of similar products. Please be careful to not dilute the power of your messaging in your pitch efforts when talking about the problem you plan to solve. When you wrote that the problem is "...one that is commonly overlooked in my opinion," the "in my opinion" comment minimizes your stance. If you can truly own your opinion, others will be more likely to do so! Thanks again for sharing Foodiki with us.

FEEDBACK: Thank you, Emily for your presentation on Foodiki. I love how bright and colorful your images were, the logo, and design aspects. My question regarding the freshman 15 is if some of this weight gain is physiological and normal as opposed to abnormal and related to unhealthy habits, stress, overeating, binge drinking etc. Not all weight gain is unhealthy or problematic. Like Jessica, the app's focus on weight gain makes me feel uneasy, but I think it could be alleviated by some reframing. Thank you again.

[FEEDBACK] Thank you for your pitch, Emily. I must say – the second I saw your logo, I kicked myself for not spending more time on the branding aspect of my venture (that’s a long-winded way of saying I like it). That, and the subject matter, really caught my attention; unfortunately, I am more than a little familiar with the “Freshman 15” as they call it. In fact, I think I double-majored in it, if that’s possible. In all seriousness though, when I think back on the stresses of first year (and post-secondary beyond that initial year), adding another task to my list of things to do would not have been desirable. As such, I think I would have highlighted the product’s ease of use to a much greater extent. I would make it (it’s ease of use) the thing that is better than all the other nutrition tracking apps out there (I’m assuming the market is quite saturated(?)), and I would have placed that at the forefront of the pitch in a bigger way. Anyways, I hope the feedback helps. Thanks again.

FEEDBACK: Cool idea Emily. It was a smooth video and the message was clear. I would like to hear a little more about the numbers that are possible in a quick elevator pitch....but other than that, I liked it!

(Review) Hi Emily, you certainly crafted out a niche area for your market; college students & diet. Your presentation is quite well designed, candid, and thoughtful in approach. There definitely could be more about how Foodiki is unique and would compete against specific competitors. What features would make it more sticky--push or pull factors of the LMS platform or app? Your menu of activities is quite extensive maybe that would be a good place to demonstrate that impact you want to make with your company.

(Feedback): Hi Emily. I think your idea is very pragmatic and relevant given the current scenario. I appreciated the fact that your elevator pitch was within the prescribed time limit: 59 seconds! It is indeed tough to fit in all that information given the short duration--so good job! I also like how detailed your venture pitch is, and you have covered all the criteria. The product differentiation was good too--Foodiki being more holistic, community-encompassing as compared to the other health and fitness apps out there. What was not clear was if Foodiki is an app, or is it an entire Learning Management System--what type of a platform is it? Also, in my opinion if you had included (fictitious) screenshots of how the user interface of Foodiki would look like then that would have made your pitch stronger and easier to visualize the final product. A completely irrelevant question--Foodiki's is a great name--what made you come up with it?

(Feedback) Hi Emily, I think this product poses a problem for people who are vulnerable to eating disorders and have struggled with weight issues throughout their lives. I think it is nice to have a way for students to remain healthy while entering post secondary and a particularly stressful time. Because of this I would not invest. Maybe the major focus should be on being healthy, not gaining weight.

FEEDBACK: Hi Emily, Thank you for your pitch! I like the idea and it certainly targets a common issue. At the end of your elevator pitch I was clear on the market, the need, and how FOODIKI would address it but wasn't clear on how it separates itself from other apps and programs out there that accomplish many of the same goals.
