Music Matters

By michael meroniuk on March 29, 2020

Hello fellow classmates,

For assignment #3, I’ve created Music Matters an online subscription-based platform that gives music educators beginner-advanced students access to quality, concise and tailored lessons on any instrument. Giving music teachers time to focus on teaching rather than being overwhelmed with going over concepts on every instrument with each student in their classes.

Music Matters develops tailored videos that help students practice and continue learning at home. You can assign videos along with your standard repertoire to provide a scaffold for students to build a solid foundation of musical knowledge and increase the rate in which they internalize that material.

Music Matter is not meant to take the role of teaching away from the teacher, but rather functions as a co-teacher. This ensures that every student gets the attention they need to experience the beauty of learning music.

While this is a fictional project, I really enjoyed creating it and look forward to feedback to help enhance the idea.

The Pitch & Venture Forum will be  found on this website

REVIEW: I want to like this idea, but there's steep competition nowadays with many video music lesson services out there. I do like that it is centralized and offers multiple instruments, and you clearly mentioned a focus on "micro learning" as a delivery strategy, which MAY differentiate MusicMatters from the rest (I'm not an expert so I can't say for sure). The ability to watch, practice, and then upload their own video is a neat concept, with the teacher able to track all the behaviour data and assess the final product. Another criticism (that I was guilty of myself) is that your pitch seems geared more to a purchaser/teacher than to an investor. I liked the detail of your financial breakdown in "the ask" and rollout phases. Thank you - I would Invest.

(REVIEW) Hi Michael, I think that this venture is a fantastic idea. I am music educator myself, having taught both general music and band in elementary, middle and high school at various points in my career. Even though i only teach music part time now, I remember how difficult it was to teach so many different instruments while only being truly proficient in a couple of them. A venture such as yours would have been immensely helpful to me back when I taught concert band full time. Your elevator pitch was professional, to the point and summarized the problem and solution very well. I was also impressed by the way that you were able to clearly present the market gap and show how your venture could address it, along with describing what makes Music Matters different. I feel that a venture such as this can meet an important need in the marketplace, and that is why I would invest if given the opportunity.

REVIEW: I’m not familiar with the context music education, so that music teachers have to do so much and teach students instruments they themselves are not familiar with playing was quite surprising for me to learn about this industry! It does sound like a problem and I like the solutions Music Matters presents. The venture clearly explains this problem, especially for someone like myself who is not familiar with the context, and it present a solution I consider reasonable and applicable. There is a clear target market and industry being served by this venture. I think from the teacher’s perspective being able to assign lessons so students can “practice and continue learning at home” would be super helpful because students would come to class much better prepared and it would make class time much more productive. Music Matters sees to be taking good advantage of a personalized learning approach and very open to working schools, which I think further supports the service. They are keen to work with their clients and the school boards and the pre and post surveys to gauge effectiveness of the program shows interest in making this platform and program work. I appreciate that the venture’s champion, Michael, has legitimate experience and a background in music and is familiar with the industry. There is a clear and clear return to the venture pitch. As an EVA I would invest in this venture as I believe it has the potential to solve the problem presented and there is a demand and usefulness for it to improve student’s learning and teacher’s ability to manage classes as well as enhance the experience they are able to create and provide to their students.

Michael, Let me start by saying yes. Fantastic idea with real-world application. This one seems less 'pie in the sky' and legitimately viable. I don't teach music, but I play many instruments and have played all my life; I don't need to be convinced of the value of music education. Any music teachers I have worked with all say the same thing - that it's difficult to really teach kids in the time frame given. The individuality of each instrument is so hard to deal with in a room full of noise and chaos. In a way, this could lead to "flipping" music classes, with high differentiation. Music Matters is seemingly low production cost with the potential for high return, and that's one of the big reasons why I'd invest. You seem to know your stuff about the market, and your financial breakdown instills confidence and transparency as an investor. This is furthered by your admission of potential weaknesses. The valuation seems fair, and I would invest in Music Matters.

Hi Michael, I like how your elevator pitch succinctly presents the problem and a solution. Your skills and interest in Music matters are also clear in your pitch. Something I think would strengthen the pitch would be to briefly present the market too. Potential investors usually check the sale market evaluating how they would benefit from investing in the venture. Your venture pitch shows a market that has lots of potential. The information you provided about the market is useful to decide to invest in the venture.

FEEDBACK: Your elevator pitch is interesting and well-done; I see your media production skills and as an investor it gives me confidence in your skills in your area. You identified the need clearly and you described a good solution that works. With your skills I was hoping your venture pitch would be more of a showrunner using your production know-how to create a catchy entertaining pitch with music and video. However, I can see that because this is a course you chose the format you did. Overall, a solid presentation.I find your venture interesting and I feel it has great potential, however I would not invest because I do not know much about this area. If I did, I would consider investing in your venture.

Hi Michael. Your pitch was effective...no need to change the shirt or get rid of the toque :-) This is a good idea with genuine potential. I would consider investing. However, I think you might be limiting yourself by targeting only school districts. Your product would be attractive to music schools as well. Maybe even more because they don't have the kind of teacher turnover that school districts might have. For example a student learning violin in a music school with no musician to help at home, would be able to practice with some support at home and get feedback from their teachers by posting on the platform videos of how they play. A platform like yours would be an asset for music schools and they can be more competitive by offering this add on to students. As a potential investor, I would be annoyed by your pricing" We offer deals on yearly licensing to districts of $10,000. This can cover up to 50 different schools and at $200 per school". if you are going to create personalized content for a school with micro lessons tailored to the specific program of a teacher, you should be charging be more than 200 $ per school (I understand it's $10 000 for the district and some district have less than 50 schools). It will takes hours to create that content and you will be using resources to create the videos so 200$ is too low. If you had a formatted product that you can sell over and over, the pricing would make sense but in your case you are creating new content at teacher request and tailored to their specific class.
