A3: LIT

By kevin spachuk on April 2, 2020

Welcome to my Assignment 3 submission. Though I am late on this forum I would appreciate any feedback on my venture.

The LIT platform offers computer-based simulations and VR content for Language Arts and Drama classrooms. We provide simulated and immersive experiences of scenes from literature. The LIT platform supports teachers and students to collaborate on writing, planning, and staging ideas.

Schools and teachers will subscribe to LIT for the content but also for the tools to gamify their unit plans. Students will love the lyric and culture jamming labs to curate their portfolios with their experiments in performance and style. Please check out my Elevator Pitch.

And then, see my more detailed Venture Pitch.

Hello Kevin, what an intriguing venture. First, you appear to be the right fit to found such a company. Your passion and expertise shine through. LIT is an effective name. Easy to remember and fits the mission of the venture. You have an added value proposition, compared to your competitors which is the fact that are going to collaborate with regional/local artists....I think it may be a real draw for schools and also local dram companies. What a positive partnership! I admit that it was challenging for me to picture exactly how the product would look like and what it would do but knowing a little about VR, I appreciated that you explained that in an LA class, performance enhanced the meaning of language. It's the one argument that made me intrigued about your product because its true that not all schools can give access to the infrastructure needed to perform. So a venture able to democratize this experience by bringing it to all schools is definitely something to look at from the point of you of a school board or administrator. If you are going to take the next step, I think you must invest in the services of a web designer to start building at least part of the site that would host the resource. After reading the venture pitch, I felt that I could not really picture the product or that it was too vast. Also form my perspective, Prezi might not be the ideal format for your venture pitch. I experienced some frustration navigating through the slides (not just with your prezi though!). A well done Google slide or a website integrating what your own site would look like may be more effective. Overall, Its a venture I would like to see going further because the authenticity, the real life experience and the education epxerience of the founder were obvious so it tells me that once you have solid technical support to concretize your venture, it's likely goind to be a solid product.

Thank you, Kevin, for your pitch for LIT, which is definitely lit in the newest slang use of the word! As an ELA teacher in my past life, I really appreciate the way you have connected these emerging technologies in such a creative, intriguing way to ELA. When I have tried to think of ways to apply VR in literature or ESL classes, my mind never went to these places - hopefully we have chances in other courses to brainstorm and share ideas! I especially think the use of VR for performances is a way to give more people access to productions they may not have the opportunity to experience and to give students that much needed idea of perspective through a first person experience, though this will be the most costly aspect and phase of the venture. There is a lot going on here, but you have done a good job to separate your ideas into different phases. I agree with Emily that you could split some of the ideas into different ventures, and maybe they come together under one umbrella.

Thank you Mel and Emily, I appreciate your review so much and suggestions! Emily I really liked your Foodiki venture though I was not officially assigned to review your venture--it was one of the first I looked at. Thank you for taking the time to write such a though review. I'll change the title from Business Plan to something else and add a section more about the competitors--great ideas. In your venture I really liked your layout and design on Prezi--not cluttered but detailed nonetheless with an appealing upward line. The menu of activities you offered was quite exhaustive and smart. Your elevator pitch was thoughtful and to the point and good brand image too.

Hi Kevin, I think you have created a great presentation. It immediately struck me as very well and put together. All the elements of a venture pitch seem to be there. I think this is a really great concept for a venture in learning technology! I can see the practical application to drama and how useful it would be. I also can see how it could be a great way of engaging students in literature studies, who might struggle with this subject. A VR simulation to help students get more involved and immersed in the subject matter could go a long way to engage them and help them learn better and even enjoy the learning that much more. Using micro-learning for scene analysis is a great idea. Sometimes longer scenes and texts can be so overwhelming, so this is a great application of that. I agree with your target market and think that this venture is very well positioned. I think that is the perfect age group for this venture. I feel like the competition section was a little sparse. I’d heard of the companies but wasn’t so familiar with them so by just seeing their names I’m not sure how they compare to your company and so that section I wasn’t fully convinced by or sure of it. I think you could give a little more consideration to this. You have a clear ask for investment. I do have to agree with what you say about possibly having too many features. I was impressed but found it all a little bit overwhelming. However, I found it all very fascinating. It may actually be that you have enough features for two ventures from this one! It seems like a big project and quite the undertaking to create the product but you gave a plan for phases of development to show you’ve thought about the steps and process for implementation. I thought that was good to have. However, I noticed that you called this a "Business Plan". From the course instructions (see the webpage "A Game with Three Pitches") I understood the Business Plan is a formal document and actually follows the Venture Pitch as the last of the three pitches. Since the Business Plan is not required in our course, I suggest you consider changing the title to that slide to reduce the chance of confusion. Overall, I really like your concept and venture and I think there is potential for this, and it could really transform the way language studies are taught. I think it takes a unique and novel approach. As you say in your reflection, computer simulations are more commonly considered for science type subjects but here you are employing technology for language learning.

Kevin, just an FYI, this post is uncategorized and might be missed if it's not posted in the Venture Forum. I will review after I have completely my assigned reviews.
