Students can then use a pencil and […]

Hello from Port Coquitlam, BC!

Wow, it took me longer then it should of to find how to post on this blog…. I’m currently teaching Kindergarten in Coquitlam however, for the past six years I have usually taught grades 2 or 3 so I’m looking forward to the change of pace and all the excitement that comes from teaching the […]

Katie, your pitch and website are well laid and and easy to follow. I think you created an excellent product. As a primary teacher, I know the local grocery stores do nutrition tours for school. It would be interesting to approach them with a student centered order form. Besides partnering with local stores, another partnership would be charities. At quite a few schools I know, the firefighters charitable supports the healthy snack program and provides the funds. http://www.coquitlamfirefighterscharity.com/snack-program.html and https://www.vancouverfirefighters.ca/Snacks_for_Kids/ are 2 examples but I believe that most firefighter organizations have community outreach programs like this. This could be created into a program that allows at risk students to help make the choices. I know at my school, we get funds at the beginning of the year to use at our discretion for healthy snacks. Again, great idea as we really need to find a way to reach out to kids and give them control of making healthy choices.

Christopher, I think your venture is an awesome idea. After reading the comments you already have, I found myself having similar thoughts as to your elevator pitch, it was captivating and thoughtful- well done. My concern has to do with moderation, as a reddit user, I know that there are many trolls out there, how are you going to moderate the site to keep it educational and safe for school use. If schools are paying for a subscription, there needs to be a certain quality to the links as well as educational value. As the website is user moderated, I wonder what grade 4-12's will be posting and commenting. Overall great job!

Hi Heeweon, What an awesome venture, I can see this being in classrooms in the next five years. I thought your elevator pitch touched on all aspects of your venture- great job. Your marketing plan is solid, I did the math and saw that the cost for the subscription is 16$ per student. With 10 escape rooms that's about 1.60$ a game, or 30$ to play a classroom session with 20 players. That's the cost of one escape room in Vancouver. My questions is regarding availability of videos, you stated that there would be 10 videos available with the subscription, would they differ in difficulty? For example, would there be a grade 12 and a grade 9 version of a video or just 10 videos in total? Great job Heeweon!

Hey Scott, thank you for the review. I went back into my Wix and realized the funding page was renamed "goals and projections" and fixed the link to go there. I was not aware of any apps that allowed students to hand in paper copies of their assignments while completing them in apps. I would love to know what is available as this is a real problem I deal with in my classroom. Something that I have found with using apps or scribing for the student in general, is that students become reliant on them and become stuck without them or dependent on them. Scribe Right is there to help them become more proficient and confident in their writing so eventually they will not have use it anymore. Again thank you for the feedback :)

Chatboats have slowly and steadily made their way into classrooms over the last 20 years. In a similar situation, chatbots have been implemented in many businesses in customer service. As personalized learning continues to be prevalent, I believe the use of chatbots will continue to increase. As well, I believe that there is room for the technology to become simpler to use. As it is becoming more popular with businesses, I see that as a positive for improvement in chatbot technology so that there can be more adaptations in schools.

After reading your article Lilian, I'm interested in what other apps do similar things. The reason for my thought is because the number of users for me seems low (5 million videos since 2012). As well, you mentioned that they were visionary when they released it as there were not other things on the market. This year I hope to explore and implement Educreations in my kindergarten classroom as I have never used it before. Currently my only pieces of technology are a laptop, a tv that I connect and project from and 5 Ipads. Usually my math and literacy activities are run through choice stations. I would love to be able to create a writing/ math fine motor skill station where they practice forming letters, numbers, words through examples on the Ipad on Educreations.

Thanks Reg for this informational post. That's interesting the connection between Club Penguin and Fresh Grade. I have been using Fresh Grade for about 4 years. The first few years I used it in a private school setting where each teacher had to have either fresh grade or an online website to communicate with parents. I found setting up Fresh Grade easy. An added feature that I love about Fresh Grade is that when I post announcements or to a portfolio I can see which parents have viewed it. For example, I had a parent always demanding I send home extra work for her child to do, however, I could see she was not involved or engaged at all within her child's education as she never viewed any of the announcements and rarely viewed or commented on anything posted in her profile. She was essentially wanting work to keep her child busy and out of her hair, that was an interesting conversation to have. My current school district has Fresh Grade set up district wide. So there is no work on the teachers end to create accounts as its all provided for us and has our class uploaded. This relationship between our district and Fresh Grade has made it even more popular in our area and almost every class in my school uses it. I'm teaching Kindergarten this year and find it as an essential tool to help parents have conversations with their children about what is happening in our classroom. In the past, I had done a monthly newsletter and have replaced that with weekly announcements and I try to post to each child's portfolio once a week if not more.

Victoria, I also found it interesting that Epic! only has 4 employees as it seems like a lot of work to have so many books available. I was introduced to Epic! last year when I was teaching grade 3. I implemented the daily 5 into my literacy program and was searching for a way for my students to listen to reading independently. https://www.thedailycafe.com/daily-5 The listen to reading ability in a gamefication setting was a wonderful addition to their choice activities. Students enjoyed having that quite break with headphones on to listen to books of their interest. On my end, it allowed me to be able to view their choices of books and help prompt them during read to self times as well as in conversations about what we love about books. Overall, it was a simple and efficient way to continue to explore our love of reading and books.

Yes, I would invest in the FOCI device. The creators have done a great job capturing the attention of the audience by saying that focus is something we all do, however not many of us do it well and that there is room for improvement. With our minds being bombarded each day with lots of new information, having an app that will help you regulate and improve your focusing is huge. The device is simple enough for most people to understand and seems to have a user friendly interface. As an potential investor, this video touched on all the questions I had and explained how it works in a clear and concise manner. The video made it clear of the purpose of the foci and did not market it as a necessity, rather as a self improvement tool. Overall, this pitch was compelling and I can see many different buyers using this product in an array of uses such as in marketing studies, classrooms and offices.
