Feeling Pressured to be Productive at the moment? Don’t be…

By Carla Pretorius on April 1, 2020

Hi All So on a day where I should have been much more productive than what has really transpired, I received an email from a friend/ colleague with a link to this article. Wow, did I need it! I’m sharing it here not because it necessarily is related to educational technology but because it relates […]

Tony Bates: Advice on how to teach online amid the corona virus pandemic

By Carla Pretorius on March 29, 2020

I thought I would share this link from Tony Bates (who some of you might know was one of the people that helped establish the MET program) on how to teach online in light of the corona virus. It’s actually fairly “old” in terms of how fast things are currently progressing (original post was 9 […]

Kiota – Tapping Into Wisdom

By Carla Pretorius on March 29, 2020

Dear fellow ETEC522 classmates Please find the link to the pitches for my created non-profit organization called Kiota. Kiota is a Swahili word for bird’s nest with its origins in the word “ota” which means “to grow”. It acts as a metaphor for what we aim to achieve in the organization- creating and facilitating an […]

Virtual Laboratories and Labster Analysis

Virtual Laboratories and Labster Analysis

By Carla Pretorius on February 16, 2020

Even though many students are highly interested in STEM fields, few end up successfully graduating in these disciplines. Due to a growing demand for more STEM graduates, policy makers, educators and entrepreneurs are looking to how this problem can be addressed. Reports indicate that students, although interested in science, want more hands-on experiences. For various […]

Hi, I’m Carla and I’m just a hop and a skip away…

By Carla Pretorius on January 7, 2020

Greetings from afar! So I’m a little bit out of sync with most of the class in terms of time zones (making a huge assumption at the moment) as I live around 15 000 km away from Canada. I am a full-time Chemistry lecturer at Stellenbosch University (close to Cape Town for reference) in South Africa […]

Dear Emily, thank you for taking the time to write your feedback. I feel flattered that you would invest and think we have the potential to solve such a big problem. Hopefully we can make some kind of impact if this gets off the ground!

Thanks James! You offer some really good constructive feedback and advice and I appreciate you taking the time to do so. You are absolutely right in saying that language will be an issue and so too will culture (I think there will some cases where it will be quite hard to also break the gender barrier). For now I think we need to start small and focus on working with only a few countries and schools until we have a more sound foundation in place for the venture. Once teething problems are sorted out only then do I think it would be wise to venture out into countries where we know we will have significant challenges.

Hi Ram, thank you for the feedback and your positive comments regarding the name and venture. Can I let you in on a secret? I drew the logo myself using a tablet and pen (it took ages as I am no artist but it felt extra special to know that is my design). Yes, I agree that there is a lot of reliance on the local scientists and I actually think it's a fantastic idea to make use of locals for marketing- it would be a great way to aid local job creation too! Additionally, maybe some students at university would like to become involved too! I've had a lot of positive feedback from my scientist colleagues and friends that you have seen featured on some of the videos (and some that sent their contributions just a little too late) so I hope there is enough drive and passion to really give this a go.

Hi Mel, thank you for the positive feedback and support. The aim would be to have an online portal (website) that schools, teachers and students could use to look at the repository of scientists involved with the project to a) learn a little about their stories and b) to select a scientists they would like to connect with. Once they have made their selection, Kiota will contact them and ascertain how best to facilitate communication between the two parties before setting that up. I definitely need to go look at your A1 submission again as you rightly point out there might be some great tips to learn from.

Hi Amanda, fantastic idea! Oh man, I wish I had something like this when I started my new job. :-) Your Elevator Pitch was spot on and very professional. Likewise, I felt like your introduction in the venture pitch greatly motivated how your professional experience bolsters your position as CEO. The market was very clear, the business strategy was well thought through and most importantly you could motivate why customers would pick your product over competitors. I would definitely invest!
