A1 – Venture Analysis – Superbook
By carlo trentadue on February 16, 2020
School Boards, Administrators, and Educators have long struggled to find a piece of technology they can affordably put into the hands of their students. As such, the chosen device must meet a number of criteria from a multitude of stakeholders; some of which being affordability, durability, practicality, educational merit, and user-friendliness. Moreover, in an age […]

Hi Robert - I appreciate these comments. You point out something that is extremely important; the collaborative aspects that must occur between stakeholders (ie - districts, boards, teachers, admins, etc). I think the idea of an individual project manager to perhaps manage the accounts of schools/districts/teachers who purchase this product is a phenomenal idea.

Hi Gregory, I appreciate the comments and the questions you posed. As this is an imagined venture, I think there needs to be room for some imagination on our part as well. Ideally, yes, this would be a product that would sync with various LMS utilized by teachers. With regards to the question you asked about the cumulative grade and the teachers influence on that - Absolutely, the teacher ultimately has the final say. This is a product that was designed to help with the grading process, but at the end of the day, the teacher has the final say.

Hi Anouk, I appreciate the review and the questions you posed. Similar to the sentiments I posted under Ram's comment, I am not an entrepreneur, a business savant, or a venture analyst! I am a middle school teacher who is passionate about Ed Tech and who thought there was a pain point available when it came to assessment. This is an imaginative venture and I have no intention of pursuing this. Because of this, I haven't the slightest idea what would a reasonable ask would be with respect to valuation, and thus, I couldn't accurately respond to your question. In my reflections, I openly acknowledge that I would need a larger team with a diverse experiential background to realize this.

Hi Ram, I appreciate the review and the questions you posed. Truthfully, I am not an entrepreneur, a business savant, or a venture analyst! I am a middle school teacher who is passionate about Ed Tech and who thought there was a pain point available when it came to assessment. This is an imaginative venture and I have no intention of pursuing this. With that being said, I would posit that the differentiation factor between this product and others currently on the market is the detailed feedback return. Although some current products allow for learning analytics, none actually offer detailed feedback returns on grammar, content, and writing nuances. Hoped that helped to clarify somewhat.

Tyler - Thank you for your work on this venture. I too was unable to access the direct link to the venture pitch. It asks for a Surrey Schools log in. As an investor, I'm afraid I must agree with some of the feedback given already - I'm unsure exactly how this product works, and how it is explicitly different from other products currently available. Because of this, I'm hesitant to invest because I'm wary about how this product would survive in a post-COVID world. Your company claims to be committed to being a green company, but aerosol products are becoming less and less popular in this context. Perhaps most importantly - I'm trying to connect this venture with the overarching theme of the ETEC522 course, that being ventures in learning technologies. I'm not sure I understand this to be an educational technology venture. With that being said, I appreciate your creativity and the easily navigational features in your venture platform.

Scott - Thank you for putting this together and sharing. I, too, share Robert's sentiment about Focal Ed's necessity. I think there are a lot of practical aspects that were not addressed (ie- what happens when a student accidentally loses, or deliberately chooses not to wear this device? Does that cost come at the expense of the student? parent? school?) There are also a number of privacy concerns that arise with devices like this in education, especially when it comes to the location tracking of minors. Moreover, I think that certain features within Focal Ed's capabilities skirt past important socio-emotional learning opportunities (ie- signalling electronic uncomfortability bypasses the human need to recognize and understand one's own emotions). With that being said, I thought the design aspects of this pitch were great. It was incredibly informative, insightfully put together, and full with relevant information and research. It illustrates that you really did put a lot of work into this presentation. Unfortunately and respectfully, however, I would not invest in this venture. It was a pleasure working with you these past months!

Vivien - I appreciate you putting this together. Truthfully, I'm unsure what your venture is or what pain point it aims to solve. I would respectfully argue that education is actually becoming less knowledge based and more competency based, at least in Canada, as evidenced by BC's curriculum for example. There are some tall claims you have made in this pitch (ie- The problem of education section for example), but I can't seem to find any references or citations for where they came from. I'm wondering why you chose not to include an EVA analysis as well. Moreover, the design aspects of the venture pitch platform seem unfinished. I'd be interested to hear where the name EduBreath come from? Is it at all reflective of the goals you wish to achieve?

Well done Micro-Learning Team! Thank you for the work you put into this OER - One of the things that stood out to me the most about this project was it's design. I found this design incredibly simplistic and easy to follow. You home page houses all the necessary directives for users to navigate and I found your utilization of Prezi as a means of delivering modules different and innovative. Perhaps most importantly was your modelling of micro-learning itself. Not sure if this was intentional, but it seems as if small quizzes you put at the end of each module was, in itself, a form of micro learning. You broke down your content into modules, had small assessments along the way to benchmark learning, and you created the project in a way that allowed participants to leave and pick it up at their own pace. Moreover, the brevity was appreciated. Thanks again for this! Round of applause

A big thank you to the XR Team on this OER - Although I sometimes felt overloaded by the amount of information you chose to include, you did an excellent job iterating real world applications of XR in a number of different industries. I will certainly be coming back to the OER to do some deeper digging. I appreciate the work you did!

Hi Big Data Team! I'd have to second Matt's sentiments about not being able to access the Mentimeters in the third activities - I got the same messages about the code not being found. Otherwise, there was a ton of rich information in this OER. I appreciated the idea of a pre-survey but for me, at least, I would have liked to have some context before answering the questions. I understand the notion behind this design, but I often felt that I couldn't appropriately answer truthfully with regards to my 'concern level' because I wasn't familiar with the concept or it's implications. Well done overall
