A Question About the Digital Badges
By cole anderson on June 8, 2016
I have a question. Have any of you checked your badges lately in the course? I have began working my way through the week five content when I noticed that I am missing a lot of badges. I know I have completed all of the required steps. However when I clicked on the details for each […]

Hello Chris, thank you for sharing with me your friend's story. I am pleased to see that you agree with me as an EVA that there is the potential of a niche market with workbooks in balance with a digital footprint. I really so see it as a way for School District or even the individual schools as a way to save money. What is the name of your friend's boutique publisher company? In my real-life venture pitch I find that bit of knowledge to be very fascinating and encouraging too.

Hello Gordon, you are correct that the actual K-12 market in Canada is much smaller than the country population and even smaller in British Columbia. However, that is OK with me in this real-life venture pitch. As an example when I started my latest registered non-profit society in BC for the few years I kept everything very simple, small and heavily under control. I did that because I wanted to make sure that the society would not just survive but prosper in the first five years. The first five years are the most dangerous time and highest time for collapse as the fundamentals are established. That's why I ID that certain Canadian market the way I did with a small start up cost.

Hello Yuandi, thank you for your supportive words. The reason why there is not going to be any official textbook for the new BC Social Studies curriculum is because of budget cut backs for the ministry of Education. Ordering and printing a whole new set of books and resources for all of the affective courses is very expensive and the government in BC is heading into an election next year and they will say over and over again that they kept the financial books of the province balanced. However that is my own biased opinion. From an EVA point of view I can help the EVA understand more how blending the digital textbook along with the hardcopy workbooks would in fact save the district, or school, a lot of money in the long run.

Hello Esther, thank you for your feedback. You are right that there is a good story to be told of what happened between the Pearson Sales Rep and myself. But telling that story over of blog just wouldn't do it any justice. You are right that the $10,000 was a little low. It was a starting amount and the total that I counted up in the supporting documentation. If SCP were to be actually launched a full fledged Business Plan and Cost Analysis would be completed which would result in a much higher price tag of required finding through the Patreon Support Network.

Hello Erin, I am pleased to hear that you found my pitch particularly interesting to you because of your line of work. Just knowing that gives me motivation to continue along this path that I have started. Where it will lead to, I do not know. It may not lead to anywhere at all or it could develop into something real, who knows. I really like your suggestion of thing this as a private contract at first. That seems like a very wise course of action because everything that I have done with SCP up to this point has been very slow, careful and methodical just because I don't want to have any conflict of interest problems.

Hello JO, thank you for your feedback I too believe that the number of teachers who are not excited about the idea of not having a textbook, nor a provincial exam, to worry about will be declining in numbers within the next couple of years. This is a venture that I am legitimately interested in and I was happy to have the opportunity to be able to explore what it would take to turn SCP into a small scale publishing business. It is perfectly natural that there is resistance from individuals with any kind of change that is implemented. I really like your suggestion of a "a-la-carte" option for resources. I have already begun doing that strategy, on a small scale, on Edmodo Spotlight. However, that is limited to only those who have an Edmodo account. However, as you had also stated as SCP approaches a level of potential profitability I will need to scale back my various district and even potentially provincial level responsibilities just because the conflict of interest issue. If or when that does arise that will be a wonderful dilemma to have.

Hello Dan, your Venture Pitch was precise and I understood what your market focus and pain point target is. I especially like the idea of how user friendly your UI is despite the challenges that you and your developer team will face trying to use both the Android and iOS platforms. Your pitch reminded me what the AR/VR week presenters were sharing with us and now I have a better understanding of the potential of this technology within the next 3-5 years.

Hello Gordon, Your presentation was fantastic and it made me think that I should have used PowToon instead. I thought from an EVA perspective your research into the market and your emphasis on a "market within a market" is a very powerful message. It is powerful because teachers do groan at the idea of having to learn a yet another new platform but the power of using Netflix, a platform many are familiar with, is a good market focus. I was unaware that Netflix is starting to slow down with the adoption rate, that I didn't know.

Hello Erin, I am legitimately interested in wanting to support your venture from both an EVA point of view as well as a UBC MET Program student. Your Pain Point and focus is something that every student would want to have. The threat of being accused of plagiarism is a very serious threat because we live in the "Age of the Smartphone" where in our hands an oracle of knowledge is at our finger tips. But knowing all the rules, is difficult because technology is changing and that change just cannot be kept up in any printed book anymore. As EVA I don't think you would have any problem getting enough investors to support your product.

Hello Dan, I found your presentation and Pitch to be very interesting and I found myself nodding my head a lot as I read your weekly page. There is a real Pain Point potential for your venture as not many schools have their own app. The commitment from a teacher, or the school tech facilitator, is usually prohibitive due to time restraints in the busy school schedule. As EVA I think this could save the school a vast amount of money because the photocopying budget is a budget that commonly gets obliterated throughout the course of the school year. This could see a savings of thousands of dollars for the school and that money could be better spent supporting your initiative or needs in the school.
