CareerPave
By ivana on November 29, 2015
The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario found that the top reason students drop out of college or university program was ‘lack of clarity concerning education and career goals’. CareerPave is an app that will be available on the android and apple market which helps post secondary school students plan for their careers specific to […]

My name is Ivana, I am from Toronto, Ontario and have recently graduated with my Bachelor of Commerce-Human Resources Strategy and Technology degree this past June. FEEDBACK: Excellent job on the elevator pitch, I especially liked the opening animations. In your venture pitch you spoke very clearly, confidently and kept eye contact with the camera and were not reading off of anything. It felt like you were speaking directly to me and fully believed in your product. You did an excellent job of identifying the pain points and how READgauge can solve that problem. I would invest ! great work !

FEEDBACK: your sales pitch was excellent, the pace of it was really good and I loved the upbeat music. I felt like I was watching a professionally made commercial on television. I also really like the name of your venture "I Read You", it kind of has a double meaning. Not only referring to leveled etextbooks but it also comes across as "I understand you" towards students with diverse needs. Not sure if that was intentional, but very clever if it was. I love your idea of having a uniform curriculum that is customizable to meet the needs of a variety of student needs. I think this is a very promising venture and something I would feel comfortable investing in.

FEEDBACK: I think this is so awesome ! This is right up my ally as I have experience developing an elearning course for a company which teaches staff sensitivity training towards people with disabilities and compliance with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The name of your app is very clever and I love the idea of creating an app that would provide peer support to post secondary school students with disabilities. I had several friends in undergrad with disabilities and they sometimes struggled getting necessary support and understanding from others. I have seen it all, from profs not making appropriate accommodations to students making ignorant accusations of "you use your disability as an excuse to not get work done on time, or not come to class etc". Unfortunately one of my friends even ended up dropping out of undergrad because she felt so alienated. It's absurd the amount of ignorance that exists, this app could really help people with disabilities feel less isolated in the post secondary environment and help them work towards their academic goals. Definitely something I would invest in.

FEEDBACK: I wave to agree with lane on this one as well. When I watched the elevator pitch I was also left confused as to the point the pitch was trying to make. I kept thinking to myself "students communicate all of the time time with eachother via social media and text messeging. Whats the point of another platform ?". However aesthetically the pitch was good. I think the pace was perfect, the graphics were great and you spoke clearly and confidently.

REVIEW: I think that a multi dimensional processor that takes you through all three stages of the writing process is a great idea however I have soem concerns. In your elevator pitch I felt like you were not speaking clearly and your eyes were shifting because you were reading your pitch off of something. The lighting was also very dim. When trying to attract an investor it is crucial to appear confident by making eye contact with the camera and speaking clearly. An investor will not invest in your company if you come across as not being enthusiastic or not believing in your product/service in your elevator pitch. I think a better option for the elevator pitch would have been to use animation like powtoon or Visme. Another recommendation I would make is to include an "ask" in both your elevator and venture pitch. You did a great job in talking about pain point, Key2Key solution, and features but did not include how much you wanted from an investor and why. The idea is great but without a more confident pitch and telling me what it is you want from me I would have to say I would be hesitant to invest.

FEEDBACK: I would have to respectfully disagree with Danielle. I actually really liked that the venture pitch is split into several videos instead of merged into one. Personally when I watch a long video i lose interest and tune out mid video and have to force myself to pay attention. With the videos divided it allowed me to learn about Edsecute in short intervals which motivated me to want to go to the next video to learn more about the venture.

REVIEW: Tina I have to say I am so glad someone is thinking about developing the fine motor skills of children. Developing fine motor skills is more than just about getting kids to print their name, it's also about ensuring they have steady hands so that our future surgeons, mechanics, dentists etc. can do their job well. This is something that I would definitely invest in on that reason alone and is also a point that I would recommend to be included in your venture pitch. One thing I really liked about your product is that the paper templates featured lined paper, blank paper, and sheet music to be used in various educational contexts. In addition to Nano Interactive Paper Products offering a solution to a legitimate problem I like how you incorporated environmental friendliness as a part of your product development as company social responsibility is a great selling point to investors. You have a great product here.

FEEDBACK: Hi Sandy, I am curious and wanted to ask is this app targeted for K-12 only ? I ask because I think it has potential to tap into other markets as well such as ESL for adults and adult learning. I could see something like this being used in adult learning centers to help mature students catch up in their reading comprehension. Just something to think about ! I can tell that this something that you are passionate about, great work !

FEEDBACK: I really like your idea about streamlining Google group of apps. I think almost everyone can relate to the challenges of group work so anything that can make it easier is a worthwhile venture that any investor would most likely take interest in. I really liked the animation and the graphics in your elevator pitch however I feel that the elevator pitch just jumped into telling about the app and its features. In order to pass the "so what ?" test from an investor I think including your pain point in the beginning of your elevator pitch about the challenges students face with group projects and the inconvenience of switching between apps before talking about your app and what it does would help a potential investor make a connection between an existing problem and how your app can be a solution in order to gain their interest to click on your detailed venture link.

REVIEW: ReciPROcity is definitely a venture that I would confidently invest in. The elevator pitch does an excellent job of identifying several pain points about the lack of expertise in pedagogy and online teaching among faculty as well as the inefficiency and high cost of online course development. You backed up your pain points sing various sources and went on to explain how ReciPROcity is a solution. This is definitely got my attention and motivated me to click on the link and read more. The wix page for the venture has an excellent layout and easy to navigate. You provided thorough detail into what the venture does and how it goes about doing it, as well as developed a strong team. I really liked your blurb on the team page where you listed not only your profession and years of experience but the various stakeholders you have worked with in the past. Good call on teaming up with a tech officer and project manager as programming and project management are skills that are needed for this venture in addition to your educational consulting. All 3 of you look great in the photos, dressed sharply and appearing confident. The price and cost break down was very straightforward which is important for an investor. The only recommendations I would make is to slow down the pace of your elevator pitch, it was difficult for me to follow along because the slide would change while I am in the middle of reading a sentence. On your wix page the orange font on the mountain under News and Publications was also difficult for me to read. Another thing I would have liked to see was identifying your competition and how the venture measures up against it. Other than that, I think overall the pitch was excellent and something I would be confident in investing in ! well done !
