By James Seaton on March 28, 2020
Hello fellow entrepreneurs and educational venture analysts, I am very excited for the unveiling of my brand new start-up, “-Questions – The Algebra App”. Expanding upon the functionalities of some of the best math apps currently on the market, my venture adds original value in the form of unlimited, AI-enabled algebraic questions that meet students […]
Zoom – Video Conferencing
By James Seaton on March 23, 2020
Hey All, I just wanted to share a piece of technology that seems to be having a heyday with the recent suspension of in-person university classes. It’s called Zoom and it’s a video conferencing application that professors have been using to hold online classes. I’ve been on social media a ton recently, constantly looking for […]
Analyst Report: Desmos
By James Seaton on February 16, 2020
In Secondary Mathematics classrooms, one company has dominated the market for decades: Texas Instruments. Their graphing calculators have been the standard, integrated into both textbooks and teacher lessons like no other piece of technology. Unfortunately for them, with the recent emergence of BYOD mobile technology including laptops and smartphones, a new player has emerged in […]
W05: Personalized Learning
By James Seaton on February 1, 2020
Welcome to Week 5! We are very excited to kick off the Opportunity Forecast portion of this course with our OER on Personalized Learning. Personalized Learning was quite the interesting topic to tackle, as it is an intersection point of many of the emerging markets you will all be guiding us through over the coming […]
Eli Luberoff – CEO and Founder of Desmos
By James Seaton on February 1, 2020
Meet Eli Luberoff. Eli is founder and CEO of the ed tech venture Desmos, a free browser-based graphing calculator and math activity builder. I have used Desmos in my classroom for the past year and see enormous value in its use, while knowing that I’ve only scratched the surface of its potential. In addition to […]
The WaterColorBot
By James Seaton on January 25, 2020
A robot that creates watercolor paintings and in the process inspires children to learn about and pursue STEM activities? Check out the video below and decide for yourself whether or not it’s worth investing in (the Kickstarter community seemed to like it, as it was fully funded a few years ago): Please note: the previously […]
Greetings from Exotic Vancouver, B.C.!

Hello All, First off, I have to say I’m feeling a little boring here, actually living in the same city as our university. Anyways…I guess I should introduce myself… My name is James Seaton, and I am a secondary math teacher living and working in Greater Vancouver. Some facts about me that you may find […]

Hi Kevin, Thank you for providing feedback for my pitch. As for the reflection aspect, I've provided that privately to David. I chose to do this so that I could use feedback from my classmates within the reflection itself.

Hi Shuebrook, thank you for your thorough review. I agree that more time could have been spent addressing how the promotion would happen. I really tried to stick to the assignment guidelines of 8 minutes of 2,000 words (I went for a combination of this) and it meant aspects were left out that I would have considered putting in otherwise. That promotion piece is definitely something that I would have wanted to address in greater detail given the time to do so. As for the Championship aspect, I really struggled with this piece (and inquired with David) as I didn't want any aspect to be fictitious, but I know the value in presenting a strong team. It's definitely something I'll be addressing in my review portion of the assignment as well. Again, thanks for the review - it's greatly appreciated.

Hi Manize. Thank you for your kind words. Having read some of the reviews and feedback you've provided on other ventures, you've proven yourself to have the sort of discerning eye that I appreciate and look for in an analyst. I'm glad that I've potentially swayed you to invest your funds, and once my fictitious COO (that I've yet to hire) crunches some of those numbers, I'll be sure have him send you that information. In all honesty though, that's the one piece that I really didn't feel comfortable addressing, and I wasn't sure how in-depth we should be with that at this stage. I didn't want to pay it lip-service by making something up that didn't have much basis, but I didn't know the first place to start when trying to create a true valuation. Again, thank you for your review. It feels good to have the work validated, and your suggestion for improvement will help me in creating my review for the assignment.

Vivien, thank you for thoughtful review. Hearing feedback from a fellow math teacher is greatly appreciated - it's nice to get confirmation on my belief that there is a real need for this product. As for the market aspect, I did try to address this to a certain extent, but admittedly this is a piece I struggled with a bit more as I think that many of these markets overlap based on product definitions. It'll be something that I plan to address within my review, and I appreciate your confirmation that it's an aspect I could focus on more.

Anouk, thank you for your interest in my venture. I agree that my weakness within this pitch is the "ask" portion - I definitely decided to focus more on the functional aspects of the app, and am in desperate need of an CFO that will come on board with my idea in a partnership-type role. In terms of marketing, I would look at contacting schools and districts using my existing network connections. As for the video, I used https://screencast-o-matic.com/ to create a screencast, using that to record my screen and audio while moving through a powerpoint presentation. I have a tablet PC, so in the few times that you see the writing appearing as though I'm actually writing in real-time, I used the powerpoint animation option "replay". Anyways, if you want a quick demo on it, I'd be happy to create a 1-minute clip for you. Just let me know.

Mel, thank you for your interest in my venture. I agree that a bigger demonstration of the AI aspects would be the next piece that I would work in to help prove the feasibility of my venture and draw in investors.

Matt, I am so glad to know somebody else appreciated my Allen Iverson quote. I wanted to add even more of it (as I'm sure you know, it goes on for a long time), but with our word limits... Anyways, thank you for your thoughtful review of my venture. I like that I was able to push past your skepticism. As for your decision not to invest, that very much lines up with my desire to bring in people passionate about the math just as much as the financial aspects. Thanks again, Matt.

Thank you for your interest in my venture, Amanda. It's hard to fit everything into a pitch, but I was hoping to include an aspect of rewarding students with free trials based on the feedback they provide (something to work towards as they use the app), in attempt at low-level gamification.
