Bill S-4 causes unwarranted data sharing but privacy laws stifle businesses

By leahbio on July 21, 2014

Hello Everyone, I shared an article about Ann Cavoukian’s viewpoint on data privacy and analytics. I found another interesting one that states that “greater digital privacy laws will stifle business competition”. I found this interesting cause in the age of technology when our privacy and ethical concerns surrounding our data is so important, many advocate […]

@Kendra, really enjoyed your weeks activities Kendra! Wow, visual learning. Can you share how you got into that profession or how you specialized in that area? Thank you for your comments regarding my suggestion. Good to know you had links to plain text as well. To be specific, I guess I found the initial photo on your page a bit visually overwhelming as it took over much of the home page as your scrolled down. Visually its a beautiful pic but initially it took up a lot of space, I see that you might have adjusted that now. That's just a personal preference though, as for the first time I visited your site. Also on the pages think like an investor page and think like an educator page, you have a beautiful infographic with the steps for what to do in the activities, just found that infographic a bit visually overstimulating. I don't see red very well so anything with red overwhelms me and I need a break, but again just personal preference. I noticed that you already changed the fonts and formatting of much of your site, as it was a lot larger before and spaced closer together, crowded. It is now a lot easier to read and go through. I loved the use of your graphics throughout, you stimulated audio, and visual which was great! Haha, Kendra I doubt your OER will be obsolete! but wearable technology is certainly growing and on the up and up! Amazing how that technology is growing so rapidly. I wonder if anyone will be able to keep up! Your group did a wonderful job with your OER. Thank you.

Feedback: Aaron your elevator pitch clearly stated your product and needs. An LMS system is quite a venture for the K-12 market. I can see the benefit of integrating both LMS and SRS for student motivation. From an investor perspective, going into greater depth in your venture about your revenue model, your competitive advantage and discussing your competition would help your business model. You were very clear and well-spoken in your elevator pitch, adding a little more energy would hook your investors more.

Feedback: Sayali, really enjoyed your pitches. On camera your enthusiasm and drive to make culturally relevant material for language learners is prominent. As an English language teacher myself, I understand this need all too well. I like how your product will have various puzzles, visuals and online tools. I liked the use of visuals you used throughout your pitch with yourself on camera. Learning a language in context is terribly important! Which market of language learners are you catering to? You mentioned you teach high-school English is this the predominant market of your pitch or all K-12 language learners within India for $2 US dollars per student? Wonderful you are catering the program towards the language learners culture, will you take into account phonological aspects, intonation, tone or what about other Indian dialects that differ? How will your program cater to these phonological or palette differences? Will you cover grammar as well, from a language perspective which areas of English language are your focusing on: typically programs focus on fluency, reading or writing or if similar to Rosetta Stone all four areas. To add to the credibility of your team, what other skills do they or will you bring in addition to your teaching and engineering experience? Very well done!

Feedback: Yikwah, really impressed by your detailed elevator pitch and how well you succinctly proposed your venture on camera! Not an easy task! I really like the name of your venture as well. I had no idea that within BC many schools were closed in order to save money so your venture would certainly remedy the need when students are off campus to continue their course work. That must have been frustrating to lose so many curriculum days. As an investor, I would like more detailed analysis on your revenue model, team's background and how Digital migrators has a competitive edge over other online course offerings. Well done!

Feedback: Shane, such an important tool. I could see the market opening up for your product among English language learners and even opening a market for multi-lingual visi journals! Wonderful idea! I enjoyed listening to your pitches, your voice is quite soothing. I enjoyed the way you captured our attention with your initial questions about the pain point and your solution. A greater in depth analysis of EVA critique and investment and revenue model on how VISIJournals would be marketable. A suggestion for your audio: the music in your elevator pitch made it difficult to hear your voice at times and there seemed to be a lag in between slides. Well done!

If you want to cater to more investors learning styles, you could also add more visuals or audio to your weebly site. Well done!

7 Aug Posted on Venture Pitch : BridgET

REVIEW: Yuki, really enjoyed the story telling you used in your elevator pitch then you surfaced embedded in the video! Nice addition to have yourself there and not use powtoon entirely for your pitch presentation. It draws the investor in to want to know more especially since you brought a real-world contextual example. I like the name you chose, fitting for your venture and the fact that it caters to a multilingual higher education market. Your venture pitch was also visually aesthetically pleasing and a bit interactive (tabs). Well done. I would add audio or video to this part of your presentation to cater to more learners or investors who are not entirely visual. I wonder about your marketability for higher-education, are you catering to specific fields? Universities? or professions? More details or specifics of this especially during your phases would be beneficial. What gives BridgET a competitive advantage? You mentioned three in your elevator pitch, more examples of how or which digital skills you are catering to would be of an investor's interest. Also going into more depth about your company team and creditials will lend more credibility to your pitch. I would invest in BridgET. Professionally done!

7 Aug Posted on A3: Remind-E Productivity App

REVIEW: Chad, really enjoyed your elevator pitch, concise, well worded and your enthusiasm shone through. Your weebly site articulated the EVA analysis for RemindE and its differenciation within the app market. For your venture, to show your competitive edge in more detail I would add more distinctive features that your app provides as well as a few more competitors and how they differ from your app. I am surprised that there is only one other app on the market that does what your product does. You addressed the fact that your app would provide more privacy since phone numbers would not be used, how then does your app work to communicate between students and teachers? What would happen if a student transfers schools or changes timetables and changes classes to another teacher? Would they still have access to the school app and licensing or need to get it at their new school? If so, how does the transfer of data work in this regard (privacy issues). What about students who do not have a desktop at home or possibly access to a mobile device? Would you also cater to that market of district schools? I would certainly advocate for my district to invest in your app. A great tool and one students would certainly benefit from!

FEEDBACK: I think your investment idea is a valid one given that so many students are sometimes overwhelmed by the sheer amount of reading they may have or are unmotivated. I enjoyed your enthusiasm in your voice within your venture pitch and the real-world components that READING BUDDY would offer with familiar voices in the program. You have a large investment market in Edmonton. I do agree that French resources are difficult to find. How will you market your product in French or English since it is for a French immersion market? You used a lot of great photographs and visuals. Investors would be interested as well in infographics, graphs or stats about your competition and market. Addressing specific competitive qualities of your product could also be added.
