A3: ‘Logger’ – The Patient Encounter Logging Tool
By Lisa D on August 1, 2016
Presenting ‘Logger‘ – the next generation tool for patient encounter logging in healthcare education. This venture is based on my own experience as an administrator in a Canadian Medical School. One of the challenges we face in medical schools is how to manage large sets of data and how best to use them. One area of […]
Welcome to Week 12: Deep Learning
By Lisa D on July 24, 2016
Welcome to Week 12 and our OER about Deep Learning! Deep Learning is part of a broader family of machine learning methods based on learning representations of data, and is a natural extension of the intersection of computer science and statistics. Deep Learning uses extraordinary amounts of data, also known as Big Data, to ‘teach’ machines to ‘think’ more like humans. Historically, […]

Week 12: Activity #2 Discussion Now it is your turn to consider how deep learning will affect our schools and classrooms. In what way(s) do you think that deep learning will impact classrooms of the future?
A1: Google Maps for the Human Body
By Lisa D on June 19, 2016
Medical education and healthcare practices have evolved significantly in recent years with the integration of learning technologies and electronic medical records. For my A1 Analyst Report I chose to research and analyze BioDigital Human, a 3D technology that is intended to “transform the way we understand health and medicine“. BioDigital Human has oftentimes been referred to […]

FEEDBACK: Hi Rodney, what an excellent pitch idea! This was the most professional and well executed elevator pitch I have seen. As someone who has difficulty learning new languages, this is definitely a product I would be interested in as a customer. The need you are filling is very clear, and while the solution is complex the problem is simple. Great job!

FEEDBACK: Hi Moumita, great work on developing your venture pitch! This is a unique and creative idea. Workplace training is an important area of education, and I have often wondered if an introductory (and mandatory!) eLearning course for new hires would help in my workplace. That being said, I work in an established environment and not a start-up. I wonder, given the nature of a start-up, how well this venture would be adopted?

FEEDBACK: Hi Martina, The context of your venture is very current given the popularity of Pokemon Go. I believe that Heather raises a good point about teacher’s ability to integrate AR into their curriculum. Teachers time and technical skills may present roadblocks to a full adoption of AR. While I appreciate your confidence in this venture, as an EVA I am left with some questions around your marketing and financial projections. Your plan for expansion may not be realistic, and providing customer service and technical support in such varying markets may prove to be difficult in such a short timeframe. I would have concerns with regards to such a rapid expansion.

FEEDBACK: Hi Jordan, Given the overwhelming popularity of Pokemon Go, AR is a very current topic and makes your venture pitch even more relevant in the ET landscape. Both your elevator and venture pitch display a high production quality, and your enthusiasm for the topic is clear. I also appreciated that you posted the full text so I could read through it after. As an EVA I found your venture pitch a little academic in nature, but overall your argument was very compelling.

FEEDBACK: Hi Minji, This is a very unique venture concept – well done on your creativity! I believe you would have your work cut out for you with this venture, as it would be no small task to implement a project that relies on so many other existing companies/factors. As an EVA I would be nervous about your proposal, given the lack of control you would have over these other companies.

FEEDBACK: Hi Michael, This is an interesting proposal, though I wonder if your Elevator Pitch does it justice? While the setting of your video looks great, I wonder if recording the audio indoors may have made your pitch a little easier to hear. As an EVA I think the setting of video does not coincide with the venture proposal, and found that it made me question whether I would want to investigate this venture further.

FEEDBACK: Hi Chris, I have never used Google Classroom, but based on your elevator pitch is sounds like there is an opportunity for improvement here. I enjoyed watching your pitch, but wondered who specifically was your audience? As an EVA I felt that this was geared more towards a Google exec than an investor. Overall, great job!

REVIEW: Hi Jesse, thanks for sharing these excellent pitches! Both of your videos are of a high quality and enjoyable to watch. The key strengths I saw in your venture pitch was the integration of a social media feel and the idea of being mobile first. I think you have chosen a difficult venture area to break into with this app, and I wonder about its overall viability. You will certainly have a great deal of competition, and given the ever-changing role of technology in classrooms I wonder if an app would be a good investment. I really appreciated your assessment of the value of a mobile first approach, and the ability for schools to mitigate the costs of hardware. I am also very keen on the idea of being able to access a learners history through archive data to be able to chart their learning progress over the years. As an investor, despite the benefits that your app pitches, I would be hesitant to invest in this product. With larger tech companies beginning to focus their efforts towards education I wonder what classrooms will look like in the next few years.

REVIEW: A striking pitch! My initial reaction when reflecting on your video was how much thought and analysis went into this product. Both videos are of a very high quality, and I enjoyed the visual demonstration of what Notepound is anticipated to be capable of. I appreciated your honest analysis of the product, both its positive attributes and its limitations. In particular, when you noted concerns around being able to keep up with a lecture using this format of note taking I found myself connecting with the pitch and nodding my head in acknowledgement of the potential learning curve for users. As an EVA I found both of your pitches intriguing and very professional. As an investor I would have concerns around timelines and its appropriate market. You noted that this pitch was intended to get from concept to release, a lot could happen during that time and I wonder if this app would be out of date by the time it was launched? Overall, an excellent and compelling venture pitch!

REVIEW: Hi Sheila, what an interesting concept! I believe the strength of both your pitches comes from the high quality presentation, stimulating visuals, and confident narration. The concept itself is very interesting, and appears to have strong merit for the educational setting. As an EVA however, I did find the two pitches somewhat repetitive, and would have appreciated greater distinction in both the content and the visuals. I believe your experience both as an educator and your background with Apple support your position and the authenticity of the need you present. Your elevator pitch was a little long, though I can appreciate how difficult it is to condense that much information into less than a minute. Overall, as an EVA I would require more information before investing. In particular, I wonder about compatibility with hardware, maintenance, additional costs, etc.
