Walk With Us Project: An Indiegogo Campaign
By mlavoie on July 28, 2019
Hello sharks! I mean, fellow students, I am looking for your valuable feedback on my Indiegogo campaign (and maybe some shares on your socials when it goes live?), and, when I launch, $4500 for our next project. 🙂 Walk With Us Project is a digital storytelling and mapping project that uses 360′ cameras (Ricoh Theta S […]

DreamBox Learning: Investing in an Intelligent Adaptive Learning platform for Ontario School Boards
By mlavoie on June 16, 2019
I’ve chosen DreamBox Learning as the long-standing educational technology product, and have taken the role of either a ministry about to fund a new project, or presenting to a superintendent deciding about a new district initiative for math learning and instruction in the K-8 sector. Here is my Analyst Report, created using Adobe Spark page. Click […]
Reshma Saujani: Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code
By mlavoie on June 1, 2019
Reshma Saujani, as shown above, is a champion for girls and women. Reshma began her career as an attorney and activist, and founded Girls Who Code (GWC) after witnessing first-hand the gender gap in the field of Computer Science while running for US Congress (fun fact: Reshma was the first South Asian woman to run […]
Root – Coding Robot
By mlavoie on May 21, 2019
Root – the robot that can crawl on the walls This robot from Harvard University turns any flat surface into an interactive coding experience. The product leverages commonly found items in classrooms (whiteboards, tablets) and its designers understand the importance of scaffolding in teaching (anything, but in this case, coding), which is reflected in the […]
Hello from Timmins, Ontario
By mlavoie on May 9, 2019
Hi everyone, My name is Melissa Lavoie, and I’m from Timmins, Ontario. I work for a local tribal council as a GIS-Education Specialist. I was a teacher for 12 years, and for the last few years was out of the classroom as an Educational Technology teacher. At Mushkegowuk Council I’m part of a project called GIS […]

Hi Sarah! Thank you for your feedback - I was reading off a teleprompter app on my phone and my original idea was to have a second tripod with another tablet running my pitch, but unfortunately I didn’t have access on the day I had to record. I can appreciate that it distracted you because I felt the same way playing it back - in editing, I tried to insert overlays during parts where it’s really noticeable, but I have more work to do! Thank you for the offer to share on your social media - I appreciate that very much!

Hey Sarah! Thank you so much for your feedback - I need to work on being more concise with my video, especially since Indiegogo recommends the length to be 3 minutes max. I’ve added your observation to my reflection and will do some chopping before I launch. :) Thanks again!

Hey Tyler! Thanks so much for your encouragement, and as you know, I’m a Susan, so the persona checks out! One of WWU’s goals are to provide an engaging project that can fit in with existing curricula, as you mention in your comment. In Constance Lake First Nation, we worked with a Geography class, but the project really is cross-curricular. Thanks again!

Hi Ying! Thank you for your comment and suggestions - and also for visiting the Walk With Us site! If you look at the Resources page (https://sites.google.com/view/walkwithusproject/resources?authuser=0) you’ll be able to see a couple tours. Also, if you open in a mobile browser and tap the “Poly” icon at the top LH corner, you can view the tour with VR goggles. As of now, Google Tour Creator does not support video (only audio). I am hoping this will change, but for now, the video interviews students conduct will be added as links, and/or accompaniments to the Walk With Us community map submission form. The next phase for Walk With Us will be classrooms across Canada learning from each other, and Walk With Us has a partner to make that happen (Digital Human Library). Thank you so much for your feedback!

Hi Basia! Thank you for catching the typo with my list of equipment - I was going back and forth between asking for 1 or 2 cameras/tripods and in the end decided on one for the A3 pitch. I have changed that, so thank you for noticing! I may actually ask for 2 of each when I launch. I have also added your observation regarding my use of “I” and “we” to my reflection! Thank you again for your comments and encouragement!

Hi Sylvia! That is a fantastic idea; showing the number of views the WWU panospheres have received - I will definitely be adding that to my pitch. Thank you for the comment and idea!

Hi Ryan! I love your idea of somehow scaling what we are doing into something that is easily replicated across the country. I have thought about this a lot, and because we are using existing technology, I created a simple map where teachers/students can submit their VR tours on my website. It is also pinned to my Twitter page (and the WWU account's Twitter page). I have thought about an AR approach as well and that would be the dream!! The ultimate participatory culture via mobile. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and thank you also for your encouragement with regards to the Indiegogo campaign. That is awesome of you! :) I'm taking feedback into consideration when I launch and I'll be announcing it for sure on Twitter (@MelizzaLavoie and @WWUProject). Thank you again. I really appreciate it.

Hi Johnny! Great job on your elevator pitch. I appreciated that your venture pitch was in video format as well. You have established your credibility as the CEO of Mathlandia by making mention of your experiences teaching math in Japan (and in Vancouver) and outlining the differences in the way math is taught there as opposed to in other countries. It shows that you bring another perspective to the table. It was a good segue into your pitch. I can also attest to how being immersed in something helps you to learn much better. When I first started school, I could not speak English. However, since I was immersed in an English school, I quickly learned the language. So, I agree with math being learned the same way. I love what you propose here, and you back it up with research and a sound rationale for using VR in math learning at 4:36 of your video. Your differentiator from competing VR math platforms is that Mathlandia would cover the entire math curriculum and developing real-life learning scenarios as the backdrop. This of course would require more money and time to develop, so I would like to know how much you are asking for to develop your product!

Hi Jiri! Your elevator pitch was well done. You very clearly outline the rationale for your AI tutoring system and the need for specific writing help in taking the IELTS and TOEFL exams (supported by data), and establish your credibility as the CEO of this company in your video as well as your Prezi. I like the fact that you have two revenue stream models (subscription service via universities and other institutions that offer these particular tests and direct to consumer services) and that you utilize the ubiquitousness of the mobile market. I also appreciate that you outlined the pilots your company has already facilitated. It would have been even more impactful if some of those pilots included testing beyond two weeks, or included students who tried taking the test without the aid of WITR, and then with the app, to see if there was a difference in the results. Great job!

Hi Marc! Your pitch video is great - clear on what your product is all about and you captured my attention, so it definitely did its job. Your pitch document was also very clean and well laid-out - I tried the HTML version first but I had to keep refreshing it for some reason, so I used your PDF version instead. You did a great job presenting your case for why AR and mobile markets are a sound investment, and I really like that you relayed the marketing strategy for your product. I feel like you covered all of the bases, and I would absolutely invest. I feel like this is an important application of AR technology, and your idea of crowdsourcing content further adds to its authenticity. It is sort of like the Google Local Guides program in that way. Amazing work.
