Jonathan Schor – Founder CodeMonkey
By Tracey Stevens on June 11, 2017
CodeMonkey, founded by Jonathan Schor, is a game-based-learning platform that teaches students eight years and older to code in a real programming language. Users help a monkey collect bananas by writing different lines of code. While the kids are playing, an AI engine quietly analyzes the players’ actions to deliver hints, feedback and further instructions. CodeMonkey […]
Game Based Learning
By Tracey Stevens on June 11, 2017
The education tech sector is pegged at $4.4 trillion per year and is undoubtedly seen as the next major industry to be disrupted. The edtech sector not only encompasses many players (schools, governments, companies) but is also a very safe bet for investors. Game based learning, a subset of the ed tech sector is planned […]
Mobile Learning
By Tracey Stevens on May 28, 2017
The global penetration of mobile devices continues to grow – this is a fact. In 2015, mobile broadband services reached 47% globally, an increase of 12 times since 2000 and an astonishing 40% in developing countries. There are four times as many mobile subscriptions as fixed ones in the world. Unlike in developed countries, mobile […]
Bonjour de Montreal
By Tracey Stevens on May 21, 2017
Hi all from la belle ville de Montreal (currently celebrating our 375th birthday)! Unlike the majority here, I am not an educator. I am a computer engineer with a business degree and have worked in telecom/tech sectors for most of my career. I am also very passionate about education and think that education is […]

I think the idea is very interesting and you have shown that there is a definite need and you have abilities to address that need. I think the ad strategy for revenue needs to be analyzed again. A 10% penetration for a mobile in year 1 is very very aggressive. Also, sustainable revenue using ads requires an app to be downloaded in the 8-10 million range. I like the format and the succinct nature of the presentation.

Interesting idea and I think the students and schools would surely benefit from this learning. However, I have some reservations as a business idea. First off, I find the format very busy and requires effort on my part to synthesize everything. I am unclear as to how the software really is the best way to provide the information. Can the students/teachers not just google the information themselves? What is the competitive advantage? The costs seem quite hight to support this venture: how will you guarantee the best price for food? facilitating contacts will be labour intensive around the country? how much staff is required for online and live support? Discussion should be continued when the business details are more flushed out.

The concept is easy to understand seems interesting and I can see the value for the end users however it's difficult to understand what is in this for an investor (VC). I don't love the format as it seems a little busy and more customer focussed. What prevents me from buying the materials off the shelf? Is the consulting and ongoing support the differentiator and if so what does that entail? Is there a cap to the number of hours of support? If it costs you $200 to procure the materials and are selling it for $399 then the $200 of extra value should be explained more. Why is the growth of the subscription boxes like a hockey stick? What explains that? A valuable initiative but need more business input before considering an investment,

Cool idea indeed! The format of the presentation doesn't show your personality and it's cumbersome to read. The technology portion of this business might prove difficult (where the product be sourced, how will you protect against competitors copying the oslution, how will you address driving areas where wifi is unavailable, etc.) I think trying to address multiple types of customers will be challenging as well to get a company off the ground. The main question I have is what is the business case for customer whether it be rental company or business (meaning if they spend this amount per month, what will they save? insurance dollars? repair dollars? what do those agreements look like?) More discussion information would be great.

I really like the breadth of information offered although the format is not particularly my favourite given that the information is spread over many pages and takes more than 8 minutes to digest properly. The need of the market is very well explained and the approach to satisfy it is very well detailed. I do have some questions: what is difference between basic and premium? is the target market instructors or enterprise? are individual nurses expected to buy the app? will they pay out of pocket for this? how is the initial company valuation determined? I wasn't clear on the revenue path. I looked at the other apps to see if they had prices quoted (but they didn't) so would be interesting to see how MyClinical compares. Therefore, with a more detailed approach to revenue generation, could be interesting from a VC point of view.

Interesting idea but I feel that there was more product content than investment criteria content. How is the investment determined? What would be the return on investment? It also took me more than 8 minutes to go through everything. More information would be great!

As a non-educator, I much appreciate getting a deeper glimpse in the world of teachers and the various pain points. As for the pitch format, it would have been easier for me to synthesize everything if the format was a bit more concise/cleaner. What is the market like for similar products and what makes WeGrade different? I think the development process may be too long and expensive. I would suggest using a more iterative process (a la Agile) to get concepts developed and tested by the market in short order. Now to the numbers: where does the company valuation come from, projected sales? if so, what sales? what are the extra features that the enterprise would pay for (I might have missed this)? if they are not substantial wouldn't it be easier for the teachers to buy their individual subscriptions? also when mentioning introductions on fortune 500 companies - is this purely from an investment point of view? I would need more information before making a complete assessment.

Love the name - brillant! The pitch shows your passion, research, and dedication to this topic. While clearly not a venture where there will be a monetary return on investment, it's clear the return is really the improved learning of the people. As for the pitch itself, there was much information about the concept and the initial pilot but less so on making this system work over the long term. How was the monetary value determined? Is this sufficient for the teachers, the Ipads (replacing and supporting them too) ? I wouldn't be opposed to donating money as one time effort but still have many questions as to whether this is the best way for newcomers to learn English. When newcomers come to Quebec, there are a number of government funded programs to help students learn French in a classroom/group setting and a variety of online programs as well that can be done at the student's convenience and pace. All to say, that it would be great to understand how Cannew compares to such programs in concrete numbers before making a decision. What measurements are used to ensure the personalized learning is truly effective (how would you know you achieved your goals or make modifications)? Great work!

Well done! The various use of media was certainly engaging and definitely provides food for thought. My first question is what is the business criteria to expand Prodigy into other areas? What is the market like for similar apps? What market research has been done to validate that expanding Prodigy is a worthy investment? Is the requested investment to increase head count or other things? How did you determine the company valuation and thus the value of a $1M investment? It is clear that you are a passionate leader committed to the Prodigy project !

Great work! As a non-educator, would like to learn more about the BYOD applications that have been most successful in an educational context.
