Hey Melissa – great venture both in terms of the presentation and the idea. The story reminds me of the William Gibson quote: “The future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed.” I’d imagine that not showing up on street view maps would increase a sense of isolation – which is contrary to the idea that the internet and social networks bring us together. I look forward to seeing the official campaign on Indiegogo.

Whoops, I realized that instead of commenting on the size, I meant to say the climate (the quote already mentioned size...haha). Just to build the infrastructure - we’re cold, especially in the Far North!

Hey Lee! Thanks for the kind comments. I love that quote. And that's exactly it - I remember when we were visiting Mattagami First Nation a few years ago, and the Chief at the time addressed us as we were sitting in a circle. He spoke favorably about technology and how it worked to connect people to their neighbours and learn from each other. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) tells us that “one of Canada’s greatest challenges with connectivity is its sheer size - and the need to connect remote, rural and northern communities.” There are so many reasons as to why that is, but one is the sheer size of Canada, as well as the lack of competition in rural areas - so quality of Internet goes way down. While Google Maps isn’t open source, it does open its doors (albeit slightly) to people in order to make their maps better, and allow edits from the people who know their part of the world the best. :) Thank you for your comment and that quote!!
