To begin with a disclaimer: Page and Brin were both Ph.D students at an Ivy League university, so they are obviously both intelligent and have access to education and connections beyond those of most people. However, many others have previously been intelligent and had this same access. In my opinion, the two main reasons that Page and Brin have had such an impact on the world as we know it are vision and collaboration. Conventional pre-Google wisdom held that the two were not following ‘conventional’ business practices, but they had the ability to foresee what they wanted to do and go for it. As with many of the other founding teams in the Founder Parade, they also realized that ‘multiple heads are better than one’ and not only collaborated with each other, but also made a point of hiring intelligent people when they were building their business.
