Transhumanity is a fascinating concept and you only need to look through a few science fiction movies to see how peoples imagination take off with the idea of physical augmentations. I believe we will see cognitive augmentation and the impacts it will have on education before we see significant impacts through physical augmentation. I think that cognitive augmentation and it’s potential are right around the corner. A scientist was just sent to prison in China for modifying the DNA of unborn twins. While this was an isolated case the technology is there and I believe that it is only a matter of time before this practice becomes more common. If you go to almost any High School or University you will find students taking ADHA medication to help them focus while studying. I don’t know how effective if at all this medication is but the people using it believe it helps and are willing to take a pharmaceutical to help them study. Both of these examples are a clear indications that people are willing to alter themselves or those they care about in order to make them ‘better’. Education is all about improvement either personally or professionally and I believe that the ability to speed up and/or increase the potential of that improvement will drive transhumanity into the world of education much faster than most believe.
