While many people think of blockchain as a fin-tech phenomenon, it has the potential to change how we transact and verify identity and credentialing. In my professional context, blockchain is being used to create legers that consolidate business information across multiple government offices. Org book is a project lead by the Province of BC that uses blockchain to consolidate business license and registration information. Orgbook streamlines accessing and verifying business licence and registration information—a feat that used to require contacting several government offices. Similar projects in Europe have targeted university credentialing systems, as exampled in the EDutx pilot in Turkanovic et al., 2018. As blockchain reduces some of the security concerns faced by government and educational institutions, the future of credentialing will likely include blockchain.
