The Mwabu venture is certainly a compelling, mission-driven venture. They are targetting elementary school education in African and are working to fix an educational system they believe to be “fundamentally broken.” They recognize that by 2030, Africa will be short 2.1m teachers and is currently lagging in literacy and numeracy when compared to countries with similar rates […]

update: Posting issue in Emerging Markets — Proximity-based learning thread

By Cassy Weber on January 7, 2018

I cannot get my ‘comments post’ in Proximity-Based Learning to register in the comments column– i.e. does not show on the main Emerging Technologies page as having a comment.  I’ve posted the same comments here twice, still nothing (see https://virtual.educ.ubc.ca/wp/etec522/2017/12/25/proximity-based-learning-2/).  Yet my two other comments posts — one in RWL and one in Personalised Learning are […]

W12 Infographic Creation: New Media Literacies

By meril rasmussen on November 25, 2015

I used Canva to create an infographic to show the New Media Literacies Project’s needed skills list. 3 points to focus: That there is a new set of skills needed to participate in Web 2.0 That these skills are already embedded in youth culture and should not need to be presented or explained academically. That […]

Week 11 Review – 3D Printing

By ana1 on July 27, 2014

Thank you for your week’s presentation on 3-D printing. I enjoyed all your materials and resources that were enthusiastically gathered and presented. Designing my 3-D GeoCity in one of the application was fun and well scaffolded, and rather motivational. I’ve learned how 3-D printing has a great potential in changing not only the medical field, […]

Ying, great job on an informative and concise report on Codecademy. I want to learn to code for similar reasons. I am not a teacher, but a mother, and it's important to me to start encouraging my son to learn to code when he is around 5 years because, like you said in your presentation, coding is becoming as important as learning to read and write. Coding and digital literacy are essential to becoming equal participants in digital societies. I agree that this is a growing market and one worth investing in. It is essential for educators and other edtech professionals to stay relevant in their fields and for all those who want to have a real impact and participate in shaping and transforming the changing digital landscape.
